The kindergarteners have been painting large, zoomed-in flowers, in the style of Georgia O’Keeffe.  The students’ flowers are from their imagination, but they do have to include a stem, leaf, petals, pistil, stamen, and pollen.  They are getting quite good at identifying all the parts of a flower in O’Keeffe’s paintings!  Their challenge of mixing colors to create new colors continues with this tempera painting.

The 4th graders just finished a long social studies unit about the geographical regions of the United States.   In art class, they made landscape paintings in Fauve colors, focusing on using various tempera paint techniques.  Tonight was the family potluck dinner to celebrate all of the written and artistic work of the students.

The 3rd graders are wrapping up a self portrait unit.  Beginning with just pencil, the students learned to draw themselves using correct proportions and secret measuring tricks for accuracy.  They are now taking what they learned about the face and giving their self portrait an expression.  Some students are sad, excited, surprised, worried, silly, and tired.  These large self portraits are enhanced through expressive color of chalk pastels.

The 8th graders just finished a printmaking unit.  After viewing images of freedom quilts, those used to help the efforts of the Underground Railroad, the students created quilt squares.  Using the method of reduction linoleum printing, each square in the design has been printed twice, using the same block.  The 8th graders had a choice of keeping all of their quilt squares for themselves, or trading among each other.
