This week is your last chance to visit the courtyard to see the 3rd graders’ installation.  More orange fabric has appeared, wrapping around more tree branches, covering the ground, and hanging in banners from the branches.  It really is best enjoyed from inside the courtyard!

Visit our Courtyard! October 19, 2010

The 3rd graders have started “wrapping” the courtyard in bright orange fabric.  So far, the tree trunks and low branches are wrapped, and the bench is started.  Like Christo and Jeanne-Claude, the students are making a familiar place seem new again.  The wrapping should encourage people to look at things taken for granted.  So take another look at the courtyard, and not just through the windows, go into the courtyard for a close up look at their artwork-in-progress 🙂

The Special Start preschool has been focusing on a new color each week.  When learning about yellow, we printed with corn on the cob.  When learning about green, we printed with leaves.  This week, while learning about blue, the students came to the Studio to make a big blue sky.  Using different shades of blue paint and a variety of foam rollers and stampers, the students painted layers and layers of paint.

The second graders just finished a sculpture unit on Oaxacan alebrijes, a folk art from Mexico.  The students glued wooden blocks and cylinders into animal shapes to mimic the traditional wood carvings of animals.  Like the alebrijes from Oaxaca, the 2nd graders painted their sculptures in bright colors and patterns.  To celebrate the end of the project, we declared this past Wednesday as Oaxacan Animal Day.  The students came to school wearing mismatched patterns and colors, and they looked great!!!

The 3rd graders are gearing up for their Christo & Jeanne-Claude masterpiece.  In class this week, they practiced their wrapping skills by wrapping objects.  Can you guess what they are?  Because of the Monday holiday next week, they will not begin wrapping our courtyard until Oct. 18th, but stay tuned!
